Guns in the USA

Most of the organizations that are in favour of the possession of arms in the USA are getting really angry with the declarations of some people that afirms that people shouldn't go for the streets with a gun. Some of them made an inform showing all the information about that aspect, and they claimed that in the United States there are 37 people everyday that are killed by a gun, however, 2191 people is saved everyday because of that.

After showing lots of details in that inform, they conclude it with the affirmation that almost 85.000.000 of people didn't kill anybody the day of the massacre in Newtown, and if somebody wants to kill people he will find the way. Their final question was: ¿Do you think that the serial killer cares if it'a legal or not to wear a gun?

In order to transmit this information in a graphical way, we created this infographic:

As a personal conclusion I would like to say that I understand the fact that this society, or the majority of this society, wants to fell themselves safe with a gun. What I don't understand is how is it possible to consider a submachine gun (or similars) as guns for personal protection. Maybe they could keep the law of wearing guns, but depend of which firegun must be prohibbited.

Elections in Catalonia

The last elections in Catalonia were the most populars in almost all the history of that region. The mainly problem that were questioning was the one of the independence of Catalonia.

The party that was leading before the anticipation of the elections was CiU, and after the results it was a huge lose for them. In that graphic we can see what happened:

Today they announced that the two firsts parties have pacted, and it's causing a lot of debate because it's a nationalist right party with a republican left party.

*The graphic was made by the author of the blog. It's not copied.

Problems with the empty aeroplanes

There are happening some problems with the airline companies because most of the times they do their travels without full the plane. In most of the cases they travel with a part of the plane empty, and even more in a situation of crisis like the current one. We have to look for a solution, because it's becoming very dramatic.

Because of the globalization, our society is getting used to travel by plane. For us, it's very normal to use this kind of transport and we see that as something normal, not like few decades ago. The demand of this transport everyday is bigger, and we don't think that this could create some problems.

As the graphic tell us, every year there are 237 million empty seats on planes. That would be enough to save 522,026 planes without work. It's not a problem of  if the plane is full or not, it's because to fly with a plane requires kerosene, therefore it contaminates the air. The mainly problem, then, is not the waste of money that the airlines are doing, but the high level of pollution that is happening when it could be erased.

¿Which would be the solution? There's not a unique solution, but it's very simple to think about it. Maybe we could dispense with lot of flights that come from airports that don't have a notable number of passengers.

Watch out with the absolute numbers

In a society like the ours one we are used to think that with the minimum of information we understand it everything. And it's false. Today we are going to talk how important is the context and the relative numbers in an info-graphic.

This graphic help us to understand why we can't take just the numbers. We always have to contrast all the statistics and put them in a context. ¿How is that represented in the graphic? Well, it's very easy.

In this funny info-graphic, for example, when we look to the absolute numbers it's clear that Brazil is the country with more homicides within that group, but we have to go deeper. As the image says, with the help of Homer Simpson's face, we have to watch out.

In order to create an interesting and truthful graphic with sense we are obliged to find some more information, like for example the rate of citizens/homicides in each country.

As soon as we analyze that we get completely surprised. The one that seem to be a very calmed country finishes being the worst one (that's Colombia).

This simple example tells us how important are this kind of details that, somehow, we are used to think that we already know or that there are not important at all.

So, as a conclusion, WATCH OUT with these details and try always to be concrete. The information like this is not non-data ink. It's very relevant, ¡even more than the absolute numbers!

It's not all about economy

Sometimes we heard that the meat consumption in a country only depends on the economy of that one. Actually it's not true, and we are going to explain why with the help of this infographic.

The fact is that the meat consumption depends on the economy, it's clear. When we compare the meat consumption of the Democratic Republic of Congo with the one of Spain it's very clear that there's a huge difference. In that cases, the economy is one of the most relevant aspects, in the cases that are very exaggerated. But if we start to compare the consumption of countries that have a more similar economy we see that it has no sense.

One of the examples that the graphic uses is the one of Germany. Actually the economy of Spain is higher, but not its meat consumption. There we have the first problem, there's not all about economy. If there are more things that the economic aspects we have to investigate a little bit, and then is when we see a lot of particular and different cases, like the one of India.

In this one, it's also true that the economy affects a little bit, and that's why they have a consumption of 5,2 kg of meat per person in a year, but it's also another thing. In this country it's prohibitted to eat cow meat, which represents a huge part of the red meat. It happened because of the hinduism and the appearition of the Buddhism in this place. That religions don't allow to eat cow meat. Another topic that the infographic shows is the one of the vegetarian communities. If a country has a vegetarian community with an strong power it will be reflected on the meat consumption. This case is showed through the one of Philippines.

As a conclusion, it's clear that the economy is a relevant aspect to have in mind, but it's not all. The statistics showed as that it's not absolutelly true that everything depends on economy. There are lots of differents aspects that condition the meat consumption.
