Sometimes we heard that the meat consumption in a country only depends
on the economy of that one. Actually it's not true, and we are going to
explain why with the help of this infographic.

The fact is that the meat consumption depends on the economy, it's clear. When we compare the meat consumption of the Democratic Republic of Congo with the one of Spain it's very clear that there's a huge difference. In that cases, the economy is one of the most relevant aspects, in the cases that are very exaggerated. But if we start to compare the consumption of countries that have a more similar economy we see that it has no sense.
One of the examples that the graphic uses is the one of Germany. Actually the economy of Spain is higher, but not its meat consumption. There we have the first problem, there's not all about economy. If there are more things that the economic aspects we have to investigate a little bit, and then is when we see a lot of particular and different cases, like the one of India.
In this one, it's also true that the economy affects a little bit, and that's why they have a consumption of 5,2 kg of meat per person in a year, but it's also another thing. In this country it's prohibitted to eat cow meat, which represents a huge part of the red meat. It happened because of the hinduism and the appearition of the Buddhism in this place. That religions don't allow to eat cow meat. Another topic that the infographic shows is the one of the vegetarian communities. If a country has a vegetarian community with an strong power it will be reflected on the meat consumption. This case is showed through the one of Philippines.
As a conclusion, it's clear that the economy is a relevant aspect to have in mind, but it's not all. The statistics showed as that it's not absolutelly true that everything depends on economy. There are lots of differents aspects that condition the meat consumption.

Really a different way of presenting this data, and a really understandable one. Congrats to the author
ReplyDeleteThank you! I did it in that way because I think that the religion and cultural aspects are very important in our society. We can't reduce it everything to economy; it's a false perspective. The fact is that the graphic is not very attractive, but I think that it's well structured and if you are interested in the contents it's very easy to understand them.
ReplyDeleteI really like this infographic, you did a nice job. It's also very complete!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the others on that graphic. There is only one thing I would change and that is the use of orange because it is difficult to read.
ReplyDeleteBut i have to congratulate you on your idea of adding religious apsects to the meat consumption and present like that a bigger picture.
